Aldi to Create 1,600 New Jobs as It Expands Across the UK

Published on 04/02/2025

Aldi is forging ahead with its ambitious expansion plans for 2025 by creating 1,600 new jobs in the UK this year. The discount supermarket chain, which currently operates over 1,050 stores, is continuing its £650 million investment in the country despite recent job cuts within rival supermarkets.

The new roles, which include positions for store managers, assistant store managers, deputy store managers, store assistants, and cleaners, will support Aldi’s continued growth. The first of the new branches set to open this year will include locations in Cambridgeshire, Moston in Greater Manchester, and Lytham in Lancashire, with the first expected to launch in March.

This announcement comes at a time when other major supermarkets have been scaling back their workforces. Recently, Morrisons revealed plans to shed over 200 roles in its retail team, while Sainsbury’s is cutting more than 3,000 jobs amid what its chief executive Simon Roberts described as an extremely tough economic climate. Asda has also made job cuts, eliminating 13 regional manager positions, and Tesco has warned of 400 potential redundancies, with plans to streamline its operations to meet the challenges of an increasingly competitive market.

In contrast, Aldi’s ongoing expansion signals the company’s confidence in its future prospects. Kelly Stokes, HR director at Aldi UK, said: "Our store colleagues are the best in the business and, as we continue to expand our store network and provide more customers with access to Aldi’s high-quality, affordable products, we’re going to need to grow those store teams with even more amazing people."

Stokes emphasised the company’s commitment to offering market-leading pay and creating rewarding career opportunities for its employees. "This year promises to be an exciting year as we bring even more Aldi stores to local communities across Britain," she added.

Alongside Aldi, frozen food retailer Iceland is also expanding its workforce, with over 600 positions available across the UK. The supermarket is calling on retail staff and managers to join its team, offering an alternative for those affected by recent job cuts within the industry.

The growing availability of jobs at Aldi and Iceland provides a ray of hope for the retail sector as it navigates a period of uncertainty. As other supermarkets scale back, Aldi’s expansion reflects its optimism and ongoing investment in the UK market.
