New Food Processing Hub in Oldham to Bring Over 700 Jobs

A major food processing hub is set to bring an economic boost to Oldham, with Inspired Global Cuisine (IGC) partnering with Ergo to establish a large-scale facility at Lydia Becker Way in Chadderton. The project could create between 550 and 760 jobs, with around 200 roles specifically reserved for local residents. This development aligns with Oldham’s ongoing strategy to foster job opportunities within the borough, especially by utilising newly developed warehouse spaces.

IGC’s new facility will occupy an impressive two-level warehouse covering over 33,000 square metres, equipped with extensive office space and parking facilities. The company has received planning permission for 24/7 operations, an essential aspect of the site’s design to support continuous production. Councillor Peter Davies welcomed the planning approval, acknowledging the critical role of planning in creating job opportunities and economic growth within the area. “This is why we have planning. It brings employment to the area, jobs,” Davies stated.

The food processing hub will support IGC’s production of over 150 food products, including ready meals, soups, and sauces for top supermarkets across the UK. To meet this demand, IGC has been granted flexible usage permissions, enabling it to adjust its production capacity as needed. Approximately 300 positions are expected to be transferred from IGC’s existing locations to the new hub, while the remaining 200 vacancies will be open to local hires.

Oldham Council’s unanimous approval on October 16 for the site’s operation as a food distribution centre reflects a commitment to balanced development. While further building modifications will require separate applications, this approach ensures that any expansion aligns with the community’s needs and expectations.

The development has received widespread support, although one objector raised concerns about potential noise and odour, given the site’s proximity to Radclyffe School and nearby residential areas. However, these concerns have not hindered the project’s progress, as the facility aligns with broader regional growth objectives.

IGC’s new hub in Chadderton is a notable step forward in enhancing local employment and economic growth in Oldham. With the project on track, the facility is expected to become a key contributor to the local economy, providing significant employment opportunities for residents and supporting the borough’s strategic goals for regional development.
